Diabetes insípida central

Definición:

Es una condición poco común que involucra sed extrema y micción excesiva.

Causas, incidencia y factores de riesgo:

La diabetes insípida central se presenta cuando el cuerpo tiene muy poca cantidad de la hormona vasopresina .

Esta hormona normalmente limita la cantidad de orina que el cuerpo produce. En condiciones normales, el hipotálamo en el cerebro produce vasopresina y la hipófisis la almacena. Sin vasopresina, los riñones no funcionan apropiadamente y el resultado es una pérdida rápida de agua del cuerpo en forma de orina diluida. Una persona con diabetes insípida bebe grandes cantidades de agua, impulsada por la sed extrema, para compensar su pérdida.

Los niveles reducidos de vasopresina asociados con diabetes insípida central pueden ser causados por un daño en el hipotálamo o a la hipófisis. Este daño puede estar relacionado con cirugía, infección, inflamación, tumor o traumatismo craneal .

Algunas veces, no se puede conocer la causa y, en muy raras ocasiones, la diabetes insípida puede ser provocada por un defecto genético.
