Definición:

Es una inflamación prolongada (crónica) de la pared vesical.

Causas, incidencia y factores de riesgo:

La cistitis intersticial (CI) es una afección dolorosa debida a una inflamación de los tejidos de la pared de la vejiga y cuya causa no se conoce. Se diagnostica generalmente descartando otras enfermedades, tales como enfermedades de transmisión sexual, cáncer de vejiga e infecciones vesicales.

Esta afección con frecuencia se diagnostica en forma errada como infección de las vías urinarias y los pacientes a menudo pasan años sin un diagnóstico correcto. En promedio, hay un retraso de 4 años entre el momento de aparición de los primeros síntomas y el diagnóstico.

La afección se presenta generalmente alrededor de los 30 a 40 años de edad, aunque se ha informado de casos en personas más jóvenes. Las mujeres tienen una probabilidad 10 veces mayor a los hombres de padecer esta enfermedad.
