Tratamiento:
El objetivo del tratamiento es aliviar la obstrucción, lo cual permitirá que la orina drene desde las vías urinarias. Puede ser necesario que usted permanezca hospitalizado durante un corto tiempo.
El tratamiento a corto plazo puede abarcar:
- Antibióticos y otros medicamentos para tratar síntomas
- Cateterismo: colocación de un tubo en el cuerpo para drenar la orina (ver: catéteres urinarios)
El tratamiento prolongado consiste en corregir la causa de la obstrucción e implica:
- Cirugía como la resección transuretral de la próstata (RTUP)
- Terapia con láser o calor para reducir el tamaño de la próstata si el problema se debe a un agrandamiento de este órgano
La intervención quirúrgica también puede ser necesaria para otros trastornos que causan obstrucción de la uretra o del cuello de la vejiga.
Expectativas (pronóstico):
Por lo general, los síntomas desaparecen en cuestión de horas a días si la obstrucción aguda se alivia rápidamente. Si se deja sin tratamiento, el trastorno causa daño progresivo a los riñones y puede finalmente llevar a hipertensión o insuficiencia renal.
Complicaciones:
- Insuficiencia renal aguda
- Uropatía obstructiva bilateral crónica
- Hipertensión arterial
- Nefropatía por reflujo
- Infección urinaria
- Retención o incontinencia urinaria
Situaciones que requieren asistencia médica:
Consulte con el médico si presenta disminución del gasto urinario, dificultad al orinar, dolor de costado u otros síntomas de uropatía obstructiva bilateral aguda.
