Un examen muestra edema, especialmente de la cara; también podría aparecer un edema periférico, postural o generalizado. Es común que se presente congestión circulatoria que causa ruidos anormales asociados que se pueden escuchar con el empleo de un estetoscopio en la región cardiopulmonar (auscultación). La presión sanguínea es frecuentemente alta.
