Definición:

Es la hinchazón e irritación (inflamación) de la glándula prostática que se desarrolla de manera lenta y continúa por un período de tiempo prolongado. Es una infección crónica de la glándula prostática.

Causas:

La prostatitis crónica es causada generalmente por una infección bacteriana crónica de la glándula prostática y puede ocurrir con o seguir a:

Prostatitis aguda
Epididimitis
Infección urinaria que a menudo retorna (es recurrente)
Uretritis

Las especies de bacterias más comunes que causan la prostatitis crónica abarcan:

Escherichia coli
Enterobacter cloacae
Klebsiella pneumonia
Especies de próteo

Los riesgos abarcan:

Ser mayor de 30 años
Ciertas prácticas sexuales (como sexo anal sin condón)
Consumo excesivo de alcohol
Lesión al perineo (el área entre el escroto y el ano)

Estos factores pueden causar congestión de la glándula prostática, lo cual ofrece un campo abonado para las bacterias.
