Tratamiento:

El tratamiento depende de la causa específica de la anemia por deficiencia de vitamina B12.

La anemia perniciosa requiere un tratamiento de por vida con inyecciones de vitamina B12. Del mismo modo, a las personas con anemia debida a una falta de vitamina B12 se les puede recomendar tomar suplementos vitamínicos y seguir una dieta balanceada. Inicialmente, esta afección se puede tratar con inyecciones de vitamina B12.

La anemia causada por malabsorción se trata con inyecciones de vitamina B12, hasta que el trastorno mejore.

Expectativas (pronóstico):

El tratamiento de esta forma de anemia generalmente es efectivo.

Complicaciones:

  • Los signos y síntomas relacionados con el sistema nervioso central pueden ser irreversibles si el tratamiento no se inicia dentro de los 6 primeros meses después de la aparición.
  • La vitamina B12 afecta a las células epiteliales (células que forman la superficie externa de todo el cuerpo y recubren conductos internos). Por lo tanto, una deficiencia de esta vitamina puede causar un resultado falso positivo en una citología vaginal.
