En caso de esperarse un procedimiento o inmovilidad prolongados, se pueden tomar medidas apropiadas con anticipación (como acolchonar las áreas vulnerables), para reducir el riesgo de problemas con los nervios.

Algunas personas presentan una predisposición hereditaria a la neuropatía, por lo que deben tener un cuidado especial con el control del límite de alcohol y el manejo estricto de otros problemas médicos.

Todas las personas pueden reducir el riesgo de desarrollo de una neuropatía por medio de una dieta equilibrada, consumo moderado de alcohol y un buen control de la diabetes y otros problemas de salud, en caso de presentarse.
