Prevención:

La abstinencia sexual es la única manera segura de evitar la gonorrea, pero con frecuencia esto no es práctico ni razonable. El comportamiento sexual seguro puede reducir el riesgo. El uso de condones, tanto masculinos como femeninos, disminuye la probabilidad de contraer una enfermedad de transmisión sexual, pero éstos deben emplearse adecuadamente.

El condón debe estar en su lugar apropiado desde el comienzo hasta el final de la actividad sexual y debe usarse TODA vez que la persona participe en una actividad sexual, incluyendo sexo oral, con una pareja que no sea monógama o que posiblemente esté infectada.

El tratamiento de todos los compañeros sexuales es esencial para prevenir la reinfección.
