Los comportamientos sexuales seguros pueden reducir el riesgo de adquirir la infección. Aun cuando se practique el "sexo seguro", existe riesgo de adquirir dicha infección, dado que los condones se pueden romper. Por lo tanto, la abstinencia es la única forma segura de prevenir la transmisión sexual del virus del VIH.

Pautas generales:

No se deben tener relaciones sexuales sin protección con personas que se sepa o se sospeche están infectadas con SIDA, con múltiples parejas, con personas que tengan varias parejas o que usen drogas IV.
Se debe evitar el uso de drogas intravenosas, pero si se utilizan, no se deben compartir las agujas ni las jeringas.
Las personas con SIDA o que hayan tenido pruebas positivas para anticuerpos anti-VIH pueden transmitir la enfermedad a otros, por lo que no deben donar sangre, plasma, órganos corporales ni semen. No se deben intercambiar líquidos corporales durante la actividad sexual.
