La epiglotitis es una emergencia médica, por lo que se debe buscar asistencia médica inmediata. No utilice un bajalenguas para intentar examinar la garganta en casa, ya que esto puede hacer que la afección empeore.
El médico puede examinar la laringe, utilizando ya sea un pequeño espejo sostenido contra la parte posterior de la garganta o una sonda de observación llamada laringoscopio. El examen se puede realizar en el quirófano si la tráquea está bloqueada.
