Epiglotitis - Treatment

Tratamiento:

Se necesita hospitalización, generalmente en la unidad de cuidados intensivos (UCI).

El tratamiento involucra métodos para ayudar a la persona a respirar, como:

Tubo de respiración (intubación)
Oxígeno húmedo (humidificado)

Otros tratamientos pueden abarcar:

Antibióticos para tratar la infección
Antinflamatorios, llamados corticosteroides, para disminuir la inflamación de la garganta
Líquidos por vía intravenosa (IV)

Pronóstico:

La epiglotitis puede ser una emergencia potencialmente mortal. Sin embargo, con el tratamiento adecuado, el pronóstico generalmente es bueno.

Posibles complicaciones:

Los espasmos pueden causar el cierre abrupto de las vías respiratorias, en cuyo caso la muerte sobreviene en cuestión de minutos.

Se puede presentar la obstrucción total de las vías respiratorias, lo cual podría ocasionar la muerte.

Cuándo contactar a un profesional médico:

Llame al número local de emergencias (como el 911 en los Estados Unidos) si su hijo presenta síntomas de epiglotitis, incluyendo dificultad respiratoria súbita, babeo excesivo e irritabilidad.
