Síntomas:

Los síntomas de advertencia como prurito , sensación de quemazón, aumento de la sensibilidad u hormigueo se pueden presentar unos dos días antes de la aparición de las lesiones.

Signos y exámenes:

El diagnóstico se hace sobre la base de la apariencia de la lesión o un cultivo de la misma. En el momento del examen físico también se puede encontrar agrandamiento de los ganglios linfáticos del cuello o la ingle.

El cultivo del virus o la prueba de Tzanck de la lesión cutánea puede revelar la presencia del virus del herpes simple.
