Tratamiento:

Se debe iniciar terapia con antibióticos tan pronto como sea posible. El Ceftriaxone es uno de los antibióticos más utilizados y, si se sospecha resistencia, se utilizan vancomicina o rifampicina. Además, en ocasiones se recurre también al uso de corticosteroides de acción sistémica , especialmente en niños.

Expectativas (pronóstico):

Los resultados son mejores si el tratamiento se inicia de forma temprana; sin embargo, un 20% de las personas que contraen esta enfermedad mueren a causa de la misma y un 50% presentan complicaciones serias a largo plazo.

Situaciones que requieren asistencia médica:

Se debe buscar asistencia médica de emergencia o llamar al número de emergencia local (911 en los Estados Unidos) si un niño pequeño presenta fiebre persistente e inexplicable, irritabilidad, dificultad para la alimentación o llanto de tono agudo y se sospecha que puede ser meningitis; o si desarrolla cualquiera de los síntomas descritos anteriormente, ya que la meningitis puede convertirse rápidamente en una enfermedad potencialmente mortal.
