Meningitis meningocócica

Síntomas:

• Erupción , pequeñas manchas rojas en la piel ( petequias )
• Áreas de color púrpura, similares a hematomas (púrpura)
• Fiebre alta
• Dolor de cabeza intenso
• Malestar general severo (indisposición general)
• Náuseas
• Vómitos
• Rigidez en el cuello
• Sensibilidad a la luz ( fotofobia )
• Alteraciones en el estado mental

Signos y exámenes:

El examen físico revela presión sanguínea baja, frecuencia cardíaca rápida, rigidez en el cuello y posible erupción.

Otros exámenes pueden ser los siguientes:

• Conteo de glóbulos blancos más alto de lo normal
• Una punción lumbar para LCR muestra aumento de glóbulos blancos, glucosa baja y proteína alta
• Las tinciones especiales del LCR algunas veces muestran las bacterias meningococos
• Cultivo de LCR que muestra proliferación de bacterias meningococos
• Hemocultivo que muestra proliferación de bacterias meningococos
• TC del cerebro que usualmente es normal
