Prevención:

Para proteger a bebés y niños pequeños:

  • Las vacunas contra Hib para bebés y niños las recomienda la Academia Estadounidense de Pediatría (American Academy of Pediatrics) y el Comité Asesor en Prácticas de Vacunación (Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices).
  • Están disponibles diversos tipos de vacunas Hib para niños de dos meses de edad en adelante.

Todos los miembros de la familia y contactos cercanos (especialmente en ambientes escolares o de atención de la salud) de personas con este tipo de meningitis que no hayan sido vacunadas deben iniciar el tratamiento antibiótico lo más pronto posible para prevenir la propagación de la infección. Pregúntele al médico al respecto durante la primera visita.

Los contactos cercanos en la misma casa, escuela o guardería deben ser vigilados en busca de signos preliminares de la enfermedad tan pronto como se diagnostique el primer caso. Si se presentan dos casos en una guardería, se deben considerar los antibióticos preventivos. Practique siempre buenos hábitos de higiene, como lavarse las manos antes y después de cambiar pañales y después de usar el baño.
