Definición:

La meningitis estafilocócica es una infección de las membranas que cubren el cerebro y la médula espinal (meninges), causada por las bacterias estafilococos.

En general, la meningitis causada por S. aureus o por S. epidermidis se desarrolla como una complicación de un procedimiento quirúrgico o como una infección diseminada por vía sanguínea desde otro sitio.

Se han identificado diversos factores de riesgo como la neurocirugía reciente, las meningitis previas asociadas con alguna fístula del líquido cefalorraquídeo (LCR), infecciones de las válvulas cardíacas o infección previa del cerebro mismo.
