Definición:

Es una infección del sistema nervioso con las bacterias potencialmente mortales Clostridium tetani (C. tetani).

Causas, incidencia y factores de riesgo:

Las esporas de la bacteria Clostridium tetani viven en el suelo y se encuentran en todo el mundo. En su forma de espora, la C. tetani puede permanecer inactiva en el suelo, pero puede seguir siendo infecciosa por más de 40 años.

La infección comienza cuando las esporas penetran en el organismo a través de una lesión o una herida. Las esporas liberan bacterias activas que se diseminan y producen un tóxico llamado tetanospasmina, el cual bloquea las señales nerviosas de la médula espinal a los músculos, causando espasmos musculares intensos. Pueden ser tan fuertes que desgarran los músculos o causan fracturas de la columna.

El tiempo entre la infección y el primer signo de síntomas normalmente es de 7 a 21 días. La mayoría de los casos de tétanos en los Estados Unidos ocurre en aquellas personas que no han sido vacunadas de manera apropiada contra la enfermedad.
