Enfermedad del legionario
Definición:
Es una infección respiratoria aguda causada por la bacteria Legionella pneumophila.

Causas, incidencia y factores de riesgo:
Las bacterias que causan la enfermedad del legionario se han encontrado en los sistemas de suministro de agua y pueden sobrevivir en ambientes cálidos, húmedos y sistemas de aire acondicionado que existen en edificaciones grandes, como los hospitales.
No se ha demostrado que exista la propagación de la bacteria entre humanos.
Aunque la enfermedad se ha reportado en niños, con manifestaciones tÃpicamente menos severas, la mayorÃa de las infecciones ocurre en adultos de mediana edad o en personas mayores.
Entre los factores de riesgo se encuentran:
- El tabaquismo
- Enfermedades subyacentes como la insuficiencia renal , la diabetes o enfermedad pulmonar obstructiva crónica
- Medicamentos que inhiben el sistema inmunitario, como quimioterapia y medicamentos esteroides
- Enfermedades que afectan el sistema inmunitario, como el cáncer
- Alcoholismo
- Edad avanzada
- Uso prolongado de un respirador (ventilador)
