Tratamiento:

Los antibióticos se utilizan para combatir la infección y el tratamiento se comienza tan pronto como se sospecha la enfermedad, sin esperar la confirmación por medio de una prueba de laboratorio.

Los antibióticos comúnmente utilizados para tratar esta afección son:

Quinolonas (ciprofloxacina, levofloxacina, moxifloxacina o gatifloxacina)
Macrólidos (azitromicina, claritromicina o eritromicina)

Otros tratamientos pueden abarcar:

Reemplazo de líquidos y electrolitos
Administración de oxígeno a través de una máscara o un respirador

Pronóstico:

La enfermedad del legionario es potencialmente mortal. La tasa de mortalidad es más alta en pacientes con otras enfermedades. La tasa de mortalidad en los pacientes que desarrollan esta enfermedad durante una hospitalización es cercana al 50%, en especial cuando la terapia antibiótica se inicia tardíamente.

Posibles complicaciones:

Insuficiencia pulmonar
Muerte
