Toxoplasmosis

Tratamiento:

No hay ningún tratamiento indicado en personas asintomáticas, excepto en niños, para prevenir inflamación de la retina. El tratamiento en mujeres embarazadas es controvertido debido a la toxicidad de los medicamentos; sin embargo, se recomienda.

Los medicamentos para tratar la infección incluyen pirimetamina, drogas a base de sulfonamidas, ácido folínico, clindamicina y trimetoprima con sulfametoxazol. El tratamiento en pacientes con SIDA se continúa en tanto el sistema inmunológico esté débil con el fin de prevenir la reactivación de la enfermedad.

Expectativas (pronóstico):

La infección aguda en niños puede causar retinocoroiditis (inflamación de la retina). La toxoplasmosis en adultos tiene buen pronóstico (resultado probable) si el sistema inmunológico está saludable. La infección crónica asintomática es generalmente benigna (inofensiva).

Complicaciones:

• Diseminación de la infección en huéspedes inmunocomprometidos (puede ser mortal)
• Incapacitación permanente en bebés (ceguera, problemas de aprendizaje, etc)
• Recurrencia de la enfermedad

Situaciones que requieren asistencia médica:

Se debe buscar asistencia médica si se presentan síntomas de toxoplasmosis. Se consideran condiciones de urgencia o emergencia si el trastorno se presenta en una persona inmunocomprometida o en un bebé, o si se presenta confusión, convulsiones u otros síntomas graves.
