Prevención:

El riesgo de que los niños sufran infecciones del oído se puede reducir poniendo en práctica los siguientes consejos:

• Se recomienda lavar las manos y juguetes frecuentemente. Igualmente, el hecho de llevarlo a una guardería donde haya 6 niños o menos puede reducir los riesgos de contraer un resfriado o una infección similar y esto, a su vez, lleva a una menor frecuencia en las infecciones de oído.
• Evitar el uso de biberones, especialmente en la guardería.
• Amamantar al niño, ya que esto lo hace mucho menos propenso a las infecciones del oído. Si el niño es alimentado con biberón, se le debe sostener en posición de sentado y erguido.
• No exponerlo a humo del tabaco indirectamente.
• La vacuna neumocócica evita las infecciones por el organismo que más comúnmente ocasiona las infecciones agudas del oído y muchas infecciones respiratorias.
• Algunas evidencias indican que el xilitol, un edulcorante natural, puede reducir las infecciones del oído.
• No se debe abusar de los antibióticos.
