Con el fin de diagnosticar la meningitis criptocócica, se debe realizar una punción lumbar (punción espinal), lo cual implica tomar una muestra de lÃquido de la columna (lÃquido cefalorraquÃdeo o LCR). Los siguientes exámenes del LCR permiten el diagnóstico de la meningitis criptocócica:

Las tinciones del LCR pueden mostrar el hongo

Se presenta crecimiento o proliferación del criptococo en el
cultivo de LCR

El LCR puede ser positivo para el antÃgeno del criptococo
Asimismo, un examen de sangre, la prueba para el antÃgeno del criptococo en suero, puede ayudar en el diagnóstico de la infección por criptococos, especialmente en pacientes con SIDA.
