Tratamiento:

Los medicamentos antimicóticos se usan para tratar esta forma de meningitis. La terapia intravenosa con anfotericina B es el tratamiento más común y, a menudo, se combina con un medicamento oral, 5-flucitosina.

Un medicamento oral, fluconazol, en altas dosis, también puede ser efectivo contra esta infección y se puede emplear posteriormente en el ciclo de tratamiento.

Expectativas (pronóstico):

Las personas con SIDA que se recuperan de una meningitis criptocócica necesitan tratamiento prolongado con medicamentos para evitar que la infección reaparezca.

Complicaciones:

La anfotericina B puede tener efectos secundarios, incluyendo escalofríos y rigidez, al igual que daño renal algunas veces.

Situaciones que requieren asistencia médica:

Llame al número local de emergencias si presenta cualquier de los síntomas graves de meningitis que aparecen en la lista de arriba. La meningitis puede convertirse de manera rápida en una afección potencialmente mortal.

Acuda a la sala de urgencias o llame al número local de emergencias (como el 911 en los Estados Unidos) si sospecha meningitis en un niño que tenga los siguientes síntomas:

Dificultades para alimentarse
Llanto chillón
Irritabilidad
Fiebre persistente e inexplicable
