Peritonitis bacteriana espontánea (PBE)
Es la inflamación del peritoneo, el tejido delgado que recubre pared interna del abdomen y cubre la mayoría de los órganos abdominales.
La peritonitis espontánea en general es causada por infección de ascitis, una acumulación de líquido en la cavidad peritoneal, que usualmente ocurre a raíz de insuficiencia hepática o renal.
Los factores de riesgo para la enfermedad hepática abarcan consumo excesivo de alcohol y otras enfermedades que llevan a cirrosis, como la hepatitis viral crónica (hepatitis B o C).
La peritonitis espontánea también se presenta en pacientes sometidos a diálisis por insuficiencia renal.
