Tratamiento:

El tratamiento depende de la causa de la peritonitis y la cirugía puede ser necesaria en casos donde esta enfermedad esté asociada con un cuerpo extraño, como un catéter de diálisis peritoneal. Se administran antibióticos para controlar la infección en casos de peritonitis espontánea en pacientes con enfermedad hepática o renal y la deshidratación se trata mediante terapia intravenosa.

La hospitalización es común y puede ser necesaria para descartar otras causas de peritonitis, como apendicitis y diverticulitis .

Expectativas (pronóstico):

La infección generalmente se puede tratar, pero el grado de recuperación está limitado por la enfermedad hepática o renal subyacente del paciente.

Complicaciones:

• Desarrollo de abscesos
• Obstrucción intestinal por tejido cicatricial
• Síndrome hepatorrenal
• Encefalopatía hepática
• Sepsis

Se debe buscar asistencia médica si se presentan síntomas de una peritonitis, ya que esto puede convertirse rápidamente en una situación de emergencia.
