Tratamiento:

La cirugía se debe realizar inmediatamente para extraer todo tejido infectado y muerto. La intervención quirúrgica puede llevar a la desfiguración, debido a que puede involucrar la extirpación del paladar, partes de la nariz o partes del ojo. Sin embargo, las posibilidades de sobrevivir disminuyen enormemente sin dicha cirugía agresiva.

Usted también recibirá medicamentos antimicóticos a través de una vena.

Expectativas (pronóstico):

La mucormicosis tiene una tasa de mortalidad extremadamente alta incluso con una intervención quirúrgica agresiva. Las tasas de mortalidad fluctúan entre el 25 y el 85%, dependiendo del área del cuerpo involucrada y la salud general.

Complicaciones:

Ceguera (si hay compromiso del nervio óptico)
Coagulación u obstrucción de los vasos sanguíneos cerebrales o pulmonares (trombosis)
Muerte
Daño neurológico

Situaciones que requieren asistencia médica:

Las personas con sistemas inmunitarios debilitados y trastornos inmunológicos (incluyendo la diabetes) deben buscar atención médica si presentan fiebre, dolor de cabeza, dolor sinusal, inflamación ocular o cualquiera de los síntomas anteriormente mencionados.
