Síndrome de shock tóxico

Definición:

Es una enfermedad grave que implica fiebre, shock y problemas con el funcionamiento de algunos órganos corporales.

Causas, incidencia y factores de riesgo:

El síndrome de shock tóxico (SST) es causado por una toxina producida por ciertos tipos de las bacterias estafilococos -un síndrome similar, llamado síndrome tóxico similar al shock (TSLS), puede ser causado por las bacterias estreptococos-.

Aunque los primeros casos descritos comprometían principalmente a mujeres que utilizaban tampones durante sus períodos (menstruación), sólo el 55% de los casos actuales se asocian con la menstruación. Esta enfermedad también se puede presentar en niños, en mujeres posmenopáusicas y en hombres.

Los factores de riesgo abarcan:

Menstruación
Uso de anticonceptivos de barrera, tales como el diafragma y la esponja vaginal
Uso de tampón vaginal, particularmente si se deja por mucho tiempo
Cuerpos extraños o tapones (como los que se utilizan para detener el sangrado nasal)
Parto
Cirugía
Infección actual por Staphylococcus aureus
