Síntomas:

Los síntomas de la sífilis terciaria dependen de qué sistemas orgánicos han sido afectados, varían ampliamente y son difíciles de diagnosticar. En los individuos con sífilis terciaria, los estadios primarios y secundarios de la sífilis generalmente ya han sido olvidados. Los hallazgos médicos de aneurismas aórticos y problemas neurológicos exigen una capacidad de diagnóstico sagaz para relacionarlos con la sífilis. Algunos de los problemas sintomáticos se mencionan a continuación:

Sífilis cardiovascular que afecta la aorta y causa aneurismas o valvulopatía
Trastornos del sistema nervioso central (neurosífilis)
Tumores infiltrantes de piel, huesos o hígado (gomas)

Signos y exámenes:

Los exámenes de sangre VDRL o RPR se utilizan como pruebas de detección. Si son positivas, se necesita uno de los siguientes exámenes para confirmar el diagnóstico de sífilis:

Un examen del líquido cefalorraquídeo en neurosífilis muestra signos de meningitis
