Síntomas:

Los síntomas de infección por CMV son similares a los de la mononucleosis. De hecho, el CMV es la causa de mononucleosis en un pequeño porcentaje de personas. Los síntomas de la infección primaria por CMV son:

Fatiga
Molestia o inquietud, sensación de enfermedad (malestar general)
Rigidez articular
Inapetencia
Dolores musculares o dolor articular
Sudores nocturnos
Fiebre prolongada
Dolor de garganta
Inflamación de los ganglios linfáticos
Debilidad
Pérdida de peso

El CMV puede atacar órganos específicos en personas inmunodeficientes. Estos son los principales síntomas de estas infecciones de órganos específicos:

Ojo

Ceguera
Moscas volantes en el ojo
Deterioro visual

Pulmón

Neumonía con captación insuficiente de oxígeno (hipoxia)

Gastrointestinal

Diarrea
Dolor o dificultad para deglutir
Úlceras con sangrado

Cerebro

Coma
Encefalitis con cambios de comportamiento
Convulsiones

Signos y exámenes:

Con exámenes de sangre y orina, se pueden detectar y medir sustancias específicas para CMV. Con frecuencia, se requiere una biopsia del tejido para tener certeza del diagnóstico (excepto en el ojo o el sistema nervioso).
