La infección por CMV que causa síntomas normalmente se presenta sólo en individuos con sistemas inmunitarios debilitados. Las personas con SIDA que tengan un conteo de CD4 menor a 100 deben ser examinados periódicamente para buscar retinitis, incluso si no presentan los síntomas.
