Tratamiento:

El objetivo del tratamiento es estabilizar o restaurar la visión y prevenir la ceguera. Con frecuencia se necesita un tratamiento prolongado. Los medicamentos se pueden administrar por vía oral, a través de una vena (por vía intravenosa) o inyectarse directamente dentro del ojo (intravítreo).

Expectativas (pronóstico):

La enfermedad a veces empeorará incluso con tratamiento, debido a que los antivirales detienen la propagación del virus pero no lo destruyen.

Situaciones que requieren asistencia médica:

Consulte con el médico si los síntomas empeoran, no mejoran con el tratamiento o si se presentan nuevos síntomas.

Las personas con SIDA (especialmente aquellas con un conteo de CD4 muy bajo) que presenten problemas de visión deben solicitar una cita para un examen oftalmológico inmediato y pensar en la posibilidad de tomar un tratamiento preventivo para la retinitis por CMV.
