Shock séptico
Definición:
Es una afección grave y anormal que se da cuando una infección arrolladora lleva a que se presente disminución del flujo sanguÃneo y presión sanguÃnea baja. Es posible que el cerebro, el corazón, los riñones y el hÃgado no funcionen adecuadamente o no funcionen del todo.

Causas, incidencia y factores de riesgo:
El shock séptico ocurre con más frecuencia en las personas de edad muy avanzada y en las muy jóvenes, al igual que en personas con otras enfermedades.
Este tipo de shock puede ser causado por cualquier tipo de bacteria, al igual que hongos y, en raras ocasiones, por virus. Las toxinas liberadas por bacterias u hongos pueden causar daño tisular directo y llevar a que se presente presión sanguÃnea baja y trastornos en el funcionamiento de órganos. Muchos investigadores creen que los coágulos sanguÃneos anormales en pequeñas arterias ocasionan la falta de flujo de sangre y el funcionamiento deficiente de órganos.
Asà mismo, las toxinas producen una respuesta inflamatoria fuerte del cuerpo que contribuye al shock séptico.
Los factores de riesgo son, entre otros:
- Diabetes
- Enfermedades que debilitan el sistema inmune como el SIDA
- LinfomaÂ
- Leucemia
- Enfermedades del sistema genitourinario, el sistema biliar  y el sistema intestinal
- Infecciones recientes
- Terapia antibiótica prolongada
- Intervención o procedimiento quirúrgico reciente
