Definición:

Es una infección micótica de los pulmones. La enfermedad se solía llamar Pneumocystis carinii.

Causas, incidencia y factores de riesgo:

Este tipo de neumonía es causado por el hongo Pneumocystis jiroveci. Este hongo es común en el medio ambiente y no causa enfermedad en personas sanas.

Sin embargo, puede causar una infección pulmonar en personas con un sistema inmunitario debilitado, debido a:

Cáncer
Uso crónico de corticosteroides u otros medicamentos que afectan el sistema inmunitario
VIH/SIDA
Trasplante de órganos o de médula ósea

La Pneumocystis jiroveci era una infección relativamente rara antes de la epidemia del SIDA. Antes del uso de antibióticos preventivos para la afección, la mayoría de las personas en los Estados Unidos con SIDA avanzado estaban en riesgo de padecerla.
