Neumonía por Pneumocystis jiroveci - Treatment

Tratamiento:

Los antibióticos se pueden administrar por vía oral o a través de una vena (intravenosa), dependiendo de la gravedad de la enfermedad

A las personas con bajos niveles de oxígeno y enfermedad de moderada a grave a menudo también les recetan corticosteroides.

Expectativas (pronóstico):

La neumonía por Pneumocystis es potencialmente mortal: causa insuficiencia respiratoria que puede llevar a la muerte. Las personas que sufren esta afección necesitan un tratamiento oportuno y efectivo. Para la neumonía por Pneumocystis de moderada a severa en personas con SIDA, el uso de corticosteroides por corto tiempo ha reducido la mortalidad.

Complicaciones:

Derrame pleural (extremadamente raro)
Neumotórax (atelectasia pulmonar)
Insuficiencia respiratoria (puede requerir soporte respiratorio)

Situaciones que requieren asistencia médica:

Si usted tiene un sistema inmunitario debilitado a causa del SIDA, cáncer, trasplante o uso de corticosteroides, llame al médico si presenta fiebre, tos o dificultad para respirar.

Muchas infecciones pueden llevar a síntomas similares. El médico puede ayudar a descartar las infecciones oportunistas como la Pneumocystis.
