Cuando el médico mira dentro del oído, éste se ve enrojecido e inflamado, incluyendo el conducto auditivo externo, el cual puede aparecer como un eccema con descamación de la piel. La palpación o movimiento del oído externo aumenta el dolor y es posible que sea difícil para el médico observar el tímpano con un otoscopio o éste puede aparecer enrojecido.

La parte más externa del oído, el trago, puede finalmente infectarse y aparecer rojo e inflamado.
