Equinococo - Overview

Enfermedad hidatídica; Hidatidosis; Enfermedad del quiste hidatídico

Definición:

Es una infección causada por el gusano Equinococcus granulosus o Echinococcus multilocularis.

Causas, incidencia y factores de riesgo:

El equinococo es común en:

  • África
  • Asia central
  • Sur de Suramérica
  • El Mediterráneo
  • El Medio Oriente

En los Estados Unidos, esta enfermedad es muy poco común, sin embargo, ha sido detectada en California, Arizona, Nuevo México y Utah.

Los seres humanos resultan infectados cuando ingieren los huevos en alimentos contaminados. La infección llega al hígado en donde se forman los quistes. Los quistes se pueden formar igualmente en:

  • El cerebro
  • Los huesos
  • El riñón
  • Los pulmones
  • Los músculos esqueléticos
  • El bazo

Los factores de riesgo abarcan el hecho de estar expuesto a:

  • Ganado
  • Venados
  • Exposición a las heces de perros, lobos o coyotes
  • Cerdos
  • Ovejas
