Meningitis
Prevención:
- La vacuna contra el Haemophilus (vacuna HiB) en los niños ayuda a prevenir un tipo de meningitis.
- La vacuna antineumocócica conjugada es ahora un procedimiento de inmunización de rutina en los niños y es muy eficaz para prevenir la meningitis neumocócica
- Es altamente recomendable que los contactos domésticos y las personas muy cercanas al paciente con meningitis meningocócica reciban tratamiento antibiótico preventivo para evitar infectarse.
- Algunas comunidades realizan campañas de vacunación después de un brote de meningitis meningocócica. Los reclutas militares son habitualmente vacunados contra esta forma de meningitis a causa de su elevada tasa de incidencia.
- La American Academy of Pediatrics y la American College Health Association recomiendan que los estudiantes universitarios (en especial los estudiantes de primer año que viven en residencias estudiantiles) consideren vacunarse contra la meningitis meningocócica.
