Prevención:

Con frecuencia se administran antibióticos preventivos a las personas en riesgo de contraer endocarditis infecciosa antes de un procedimiento dental o cirugías que involucren las vías respiratorias, urinarias o intestinales. Se recomienda igualmente que las personas con antecedentes de endocarditis previa continúen sus chequeos médicos.

Los usuarios de drogas intravenosas también están en riesgo de presentar esta afección, ya que la práctica de inyectarse con agujas sin esterilizar aumenta la exposición del torrente sanguíneo a agentes infecciosos. Se debe buscar entonces tratamiento para la adicción y, de no ser posible, se debe usar una aguja nueva para cada inyección, evitando compartir cualquier elemento relacionado con este proceso y utilizando algodón con alcohol para esterilizar el sitio de la inyección con el fin de reducir el riesgo.
