Infección por VIH asintomática
Definición:
Es una fase en el transcurso de la infección crónica con VIH (virus de la inmunodeficiencia humana) durante la cual no hay sÃntomas de la infección por VIH.
Causas, incidencia y factores de riesgo:
La infección por VIH asintomática está caracterizada por un perÃodo de tiempo variable en el cual hay un lento deterioro del sistema inmunitario, sin sÃntomas clÃnicos. Hay un descenso frecuente en los conteos de CD4, un indicador del funcionamiento inmunitario.
La duración de esta fase es altamente variable entre individuos y se correlaciona con el nivel de replicación del HIV en cada persona, al igual que las diferencias en la forma en que el sistema inmunitario maneja el virus.
En algunos individuos, este perÃodo de tiempo puede durar 10 años o más, mientras que en otros, los sÃntomas clÃnicos y el empeoramiento de la función inmunitaria se presentan después de unos años de la infección original.
