En muchos casos, el examen por parte del médico indica retardo en el desarrollo de las habilidades motoras. Los reflejos infantiles (tales como el de succión y el del susto) pueden persistir después de la edad en la que por lo general desaparecen. El temblor muscular o espasticidad puede ser evidente, con una tendencia de los niños menores de un año a poner los brazos hacia los costados, efectuar movimientos de tijeras con las piernas u otros movimientos anormales.
