Tratamiento:

No existe tratamiento efectivo conocido. El objetivo del tratamiento es aliviar los síntomas. En algunos casos, se requiere rehabilitación para la debilidad o la torpeza, lo cual puede abarcar fisioterapia, terapia ocupacional o terapia del lenguaje.

Ocasionalmente, algunos pacientes se pueden beneficiar de medicamentos que les ayuden a mejorar la memoria, como los que se utilizan para tratar la enfermedad de Alzheimer.

Las convulsiones, algunas veces llamadas "crisis amiloides", se pueden tratar con anticonvulsivos como fenitoína (Dilantin) y carbamazepina (Tegretol).

Expectativas (pronóstico):

El trastorno empeora lentamente, pero varía de una persona a otra.

Complicaciones:

Demencia
Hidrocefalia (poco común)
Crisis epilépticas
Episodios repetitivos de sangrado en el cerebro

Situaciones que requieren asistencia médica:

Acuda a la sala de urgencias o llame al número local de emergencias (como el 911 en los Estados Unidos) si presenta una súbita pérdida del movimiento, la sensibilidad, la visión o el habla.
