SÃntomas:
- Dolor de cabeza
- Náuseas y vómitos
- Cuello rÃgido
- Rigidez en los hombros y otros tipos de dolores musculares
- Fiebre
- Sensibilidad a la luz ( fotofobia )
- Sensibilidad a los ruidos fuertes

Cambios en el estado mental
- confusión
- desorientación
- disminución del perÃodo de atención
- irritabilidad
- somnolencia , letargo , dificultad para despertar
- Cambios en la visión , visión borrosa , disminución de la visión
- Convulsiones
Signos y exámenes:
Un examen puede indicar la presencia de meningitis. Se pueden presentar déficits neurológicos focales (pérdida localizada de las funciones nerviosas) y las pruebas neurológicas podrÃan mostrar disminución de la función nerviosa craneal, incluyendo los nervios que controlan el movimiento ocular.
Los exámenes son, entre otros:
- EEG (electroencefalograma) si se presentan convulsiones
- TC de la cabeza .
- AngiografÃa cerebral si se presentan sÃntomas vasculares

o
RRP
en suero (utilizados como pruebas de detección de la infección por sÃfilis). Si son positivos, se requiere una de las siguientes pruebas para confirmar el diagnóstico:
- FTA-ABS
- MHA-TP
- Examen de LCR (lÃquido cefalorraquÃdeo)
