Mielopatía sifilítica - Overview

Definición:

Es una complicación de una sífilis no tratada que se caracteriza por debilidad muscular y sensaciones anormales.

Causas, incidencia y factores de riesgo:

La mielopatía sifilítica es una forma de neurosífilis que es una complicación de la infección por sífilis terciaria o tardía. La sífilis es una enfermedad infecciosa de transmisión sexual. Para mayor información sobre la enfermedad, ver el artículo sobre sífilis.

La afección llamada tabes dorsal abarca la mielopatía sifilítica y síntomas adicionales de daño neurológico.

La infección causa daño a la médula espinal y al tejido nervioso periférico.

La mielopatía sifilítica actualmente es poco común puesto que la sífilis generalmente se trata en los estados iniciales de la enfermedad. Los exámenes sanguíneos pueden identificar la enfermedad en su forma latente o silenciosa. Tales exámenes se realizan a las personas que donan sangre y a las mujeres en embarazo.
