Prevención:

La prevención del AIT comprende el control de los factores de riesgo. La hipertensión, la diabetes, la cardiopatía y otros trastornos asociados deben tratarse adecuadamente y se debe suspender el consumo de tabaco.

El uso de anticoagulantes puede prevenir los accidentes cerebrovasculares en algunos pacientes que presentan coágulos sanguíneos o fibrilación auricular.

La terapia con aspirina (81 mg al día o 100 mg cada dos días) actualmente se recomienda para la prevención de accidente cerebrovascular en mujeres menores de 65 años, en tanto los beneficios superen los riesgos. Las mujeres de más de 65 años deben tomar aspirina para prevenir un ataque cardíaco y accidente cerebrovascular únicamente si su presión arterial está controlada y si el beneficio es mayor al riesgo de sangrado gastrointestinal y hemorragia cerebral .

La endarterectomía carotídea puede prevenir el accidente cerebrovascular en ciertos pacientes.
