Delirio

Definición:

Es una afección de confusión seria y cambios rápidos en la función cerebral, que suele ser causada por una enfermedad física o mental tratable.

Causas, incidencia y factores de riesgo:

Los estados de confusión aguda suelen ser el resultado de una enfermedad física o mental y, por lo general, son temporales y reversibles. Los trastornos que producen delirio son muchos y muy variados, entre los que se cuentan las afecciones que privan de oxígeno y otras sustancias al cerebro.

El delirio puede ser causado por enfermedades de los sistemas corporales distintos al cerebro, por tóxicos, por desequilibrios de líquidos/ electrolitos o alteración ácido/básica y por otras afecciones agudas y graves. Las infecciones como las de las vías urinarias o la neumonía pueden desencadenar el delirio en individuos con daño cerebral preexistente (accidentes cerebrovasculares previos, demencia).

Los pacientes con lesiones cerebrales preexistentes más graves tienen mayor probabilidad de presentar delirio a partir de enfermedades adicionales.
