Neuritis óptica

Definición:

Es la inflamación del nervio óptico que puede causar una pérdida súbita y parcial de la visión en el ojo afectado.

Causas, incidencia y factores de riesgo:

La causa de la neuritis óptica se desconoce. La inflamación repentina del nervio óptico (el nervio que conecta el ojo con el cerebro) provoca la hinchazón y la destrucción de la cubierta exterior, llamada la vaina de mielina . Dicha inflamación ocasionalmente puede ser el resultado de una infección viral o puede ser causada por enfermedades autoinmunitarias , como la esclerosis múltiple . Los factores de riesgo de esta enfermedad están relacionados con sus causas potenciales.
