Parálisis general - Overview

Definición:

Es un deterioro del funcionamiento mental causado por daño al cerebro a partir de una sífilis no tratada.

Causas, incidencia y factores de riesgo:

La parálisis general es una forma de neurosífilis y actualmente es muy poco común.

La infección por sífilis puede aparecer en muchas formas diferentes y dañar muchos nervios diferentes del cerebro. Este daño puede causar:

Funcionamiento mental anormal que incluye alucinaciones e ideas falsas (delirios)
Dolores "relámpago", agudos y breves que ocurren con el tabes dorsal
Disminución de la actividad mental
Cambios oculares con respuesta pupilar anormal
Cambios en el estado anímico
Reflejos hiperactivos
Cambios de personalidad
Cambios en el habla

La parálisis generalmente comienza alrededor de los 15 a 20 años después de la infección con sífilis. Entre los factores de riesgo se pueden mencionar infección por sífilis e infección por otras enfermedades de transmisión sexual, como la gonorrea (la cual puede ocultar síntomas de la infección por sífilis).

Las infecciones por sífilis se transmiten mediante el contacto sexual con una persona infectada, pero también se pueden transmitir por contacto no sexual.
