Un examen ocular puede mostrar un cambio en la respuesta pupilar, mientras que un examen neurológico y muscular muestra demencia que progresa lentamente, con pérdida de múltiples funciones cerebrales. La debilidad muscular puede ser evidente y es posible que exista una pérdida del sentido vibratorio y de posición. Son comunes las perturbaciones de la marcha y la persona es incapaz de permanecer de pie con los ojos cerrados (prueba de Romberg).
