Es posible que se necesite un procedimiento quirúrgico, llamado
endarterectomÃa carotÃdea
, para retirar la placa de las arterias carótidas (cuello), especialmente si más del 70% de la arteria está obstruida.
Expectativas (pronóstico):
El accidente cerebrovascular es una causa importante de muerte en los Estados Unidos, y aproximadamente una cuarta parte de las personas que la padecen mueren por esta causa o sus complicaciones. Cerca de la mitad presenta discapacidades a largo plazo y una cuarta parte recupera la mayorÃa o todas sus funciones.
Situaciones que requieren asistencia médica:
Si los sÃntomas se presentan, se debe acudir a la sala de urgencias o llamar al número de emergencia local (el 911 en Estados Unidos).
