Amaurosis fugaz

Definición:

Es la pérdida de la visión de un ojo debido a la ausencia temporal de sangre en la retina .

Causas, incidencia y factores de riesgo:

Se cree que la amaurosis fugaz resulta de un coágulo de una placa en la arteria carótida que se desprende y viaja hasta la arteria retiniana en el ojo, bloqueándola por un tiempo y produciendo pérdida de la visión en ese ojo durante el período en que se interrumpa el suministro de sangre.

El principal factor de riesgo para esta condición es la aterosclerosis de la arteria carótida en el cuello, cuyos factores de riesgo a su vez son: enfermedad cardíaca , colesterol alto , consumo de cigarrillo , diabetes y presión sanguínea alta .
